Announcement follows
Journalists across the globe can apply for an International Media Studies Master`s Program in Bonn, Germany. Full scholarships will be awarded to ten applicants from Africa, Asia, Latin America or Eastern Europe. The program is sponsored by German media group Deutsche Welle, the University of Bonn and other organizations.
The four-semester, full-time program combines theory with training in practical journalism skills, and covers such topics as media and development, media economics, and communication science. The program ends with a master`s thesis and colloquium. Successful graduates receive a Master of Arts (M.A.).
Application
The application deadline has been extended. If you are interested in participating in the International Media Studies program, please send us your application. Applications will now be accepted until May 15, 2010.
Application process
Applicants are required to submit the following documents:
- completed application form
- curriculum vitae
- statement of purpose
- one passport-size photograph
- copy of your passport
Please note that the following documents (both the copies of the certificates and the translations into German or English) need to be certified. The stamp of authority that certifies the documents must be in English or German. Please refrain from sending originals. Certified copies suffice.
- academic degree(s) including transcripts
- proof of at least one year`s work experience in the field of media after your degree
If you are an applicant from China, Vietnam and Mongolia you need to submit original Certificate of APS.
Language certificates
If your first language is not English, you need to provide evidence of your English language skills by submitting one of the following:
- TOEFL: paper-based: score 557 or computer- based: score 220 or internet- based: score 83.
- IELTS: an overall band score of at least 6.0 or
- confirming letter from your previous university, if your first degree course was taught in English.
If your first language is not German and you have not completed a German language degree course, we require one of the following German language proficiency tests for Higher Education:
- DSH level 1
- TestDaF level 3, 3, 3, 3 (www.testdaf.de) or
- Goethe Zertifikat level B2.

Job description
PhD in Mathematics, applied to research in ‘Biostatistics and Bioinformatics’
Authorities and official bodies world-wide require animal experiments in order to be able to guarantee the safety of clinical tests on humans for medical products. Through implementation of what they call the “3Rs” initiative, the NIH has been striving to develop alternative product testing methods that will: Reduce the number of animals used in testing, Refine testing procedures so animals experience less pain and distress; or Replace animals with non-animal testing systems.
The goal of this project is to investigate innovative statistical approaches that offer ways to reduce the number of animals in future toxicology studies to obtain the same information as is currently the case, or obtain more information from existing data sets (better study design, dose-response models, more accurate response variables, complex hierarchical clustering models. Longitudinal models,…). In addition and also within the “3Rs” initiative, this project wants to investigate the predictive potential of particular in-vitro tests for in-vivo animal experiments. To that purpose multivariate projection methods, surrogate-marker methodologies, joint modeling of multivariate outcomes of different data types,.. will be in demand.
The main goal of this 6 months period is to prepare the candidate for a Baekeland Grant. Both in September and in January an application for such grant will be submit and an extension for the next 4 years is conditional on the success of these applications. In case of a successful application a PhD will be initiated.
Profile
*Experience with the design and analysis of statistical applications (e.g in the pharmaceutical industry);
*experience in the use of statistical software such as SAS, S-Plus, R, StatXact, etc.;
*excellent knowledge of the English language and good scientific writing skills;
*be intrinsically motivated, think analytically and creatively, work in an organised and focused manner;
*enjoy working in an multidisciplinary and multicultural environment.
Diploma
Master degree in (Bio-)Statistics or an equivalent degree.

The appointment takes effect from June 1, 2010, for a period of 6 months, extendable to a total period of 4 years conditional on the success of a Baekeland Grant

Ordinarily upto 2 years.

The University Scholars Leadership Symposium 2010 is an International Humanitarian Training Program for Outstanding College Students to learn, explore, and address global concern of the plight of those suffering in extreme poverty. This Leadership Symposium is initiated by Humanitarian Affairs, United Kingdom. Humanitarian Affairs United Kingdom is a member of The World Association of Non Government Organization and World Alliance for Citizenship Participation. The Politecnico di Torino offers international students the possibility to receive a scholarship and other benefits to graduate from the Politecnico di Torino attending a Master of Science program in Engineering or Architecture.
The initiative is promoted by the Politecnico di Torino and the Compagnia di San Paolo.

General information on the Master of Science programs
Location: Torino
Language in which the courses are held: English or Italian
Length: 2 years
The activities will begin in September 2010.

Requirements
Academic requirements
In order to be admitted into a Master of Science program, applicants must possess a university degree equivalent to a Bachelor of Science degree, which is approximately equivalent to three or four years after secondary school, depending on the number of secondary school years; alternatively, they must have completed at least 8 semesters of university courses, in a national school system that requires 11 or 12 years of study before enrolling in university.

Application is open to students who:
1. are not Italian citizens, or are Italian citizens who are also in possess of another citizenship;
2. are not already enrolled in a Master of Science program of the Politecnico di Torino before the 2010/2011 academic year;
3. are not recipients of any other scholarships, Italian or foreign.

Obtaining a degree at the Politecnico di Torino
To graduate at the Politecnico di Torino, students must attain a total of 120 credits, including exams and the final dissertation. A plan of studies must be outlined under the guidance of the student`s academic tutor to identify, in relation to the student`s previous academic career, the courses additionally required to complete the program of studies for theMaster of Science in which the student is enrolled at the Politecnico di Torino. The time required to graduate is approximately two years. However, the effective duration is also dependent upon each student`s capacity. Note also that the time required for the compulsory Italian course is not considered in the estimated duration of the program.

Please note that scholarship recipients must attend their course for its entire length (2 years – 120 credits). Students who have already attended other university courses can ask for a credit transfer up to a maximum of 10 credits per year (20 credits in total). Please note that credits achieved in preparatory courses or in the first year/second year in systems where preuniversity education lasts 10/11 years can not be taken into account.

Scholarships
Selection criteria
Applicants will be selected on the basis of their previous academic career and of their Curriculum Vitae.

Amount of the scholarship
1. The gross amount of the scholarship is 6.000 Euro per year for the complete period. The exact net sum is dependent upon the individual tax conditions of each student, which can be verified only upon the arrival of the student.
2. The amount of the scholarship will not be increased in case the student will need more time to graduate than indicated.
3. The allocation of the scholarship is dependent upon the submission, within 10 days from the arrival in Italy of the student, of the original documentation, which must correspond with the documentation attached to the online form (see the `Selection outcomes` section below).
4. Payment of the scholarship occurs periodically. The first instalment is dependent upon the possession of the relevant documentation (enrollment certification, residence permit, Italian fiscal code, and bank account in the name of the scholarship recipient), all obtainable upon arrival in Italy; for this reason, the first instalment is not paid at the moment of arrival at the Politecnico di Torino, but in the course of the following months.

Requirements to maintain the scholarship
1. Given that it is not possible to combine the benefits received from more than one scholarship, students who are assigned another study grant while receiving the Politecnico di Torino scholarship must promptly notify the Politecnico di Torino.
2. Payment of the scholarship will be suspended if the academic performance of the recipient does not meet a satisfactory level.

How to apply
Scholarship winners will be selected among the students who have successfully completed and submitted the online application form within March 10th, 2010.

Notes:
1. Enrolment at the Politecnico includes insurance coverage for accidents occurring on the university premises.
2. Medical insurance for emergencies (First Aid), as required by the law for non-EU citizens, is about 100 EURO per year. Upon their arrival in Italy, students must pay this amount to INA Assitalia: this is required for the conversion of the entry visa into a residence permit. For further information on these matters, see the Health insurance section.

We advise students to go to the Italian Embassy or Consulate to inform themselves on the necessary requirements to obtain an entry visa in Italy.
